FAQ

What are the functional masterbatches and what do they do?

2024-07-19

Functional masterbatch refers to a plastic additive concentrate with a specific function, which can give specific properties to plastic products after mixing with raw materials such as resins.

Antistatic masterbatch: usually contains antistatic agents, such as cationic, anionic, non-ionic, etc. These antistatic agents can form a conductive layer on the plastic surface, or form a conductive layer by migrating to the surface to absorb moisture from the air, so that static electricity can be quickly conducted and dissipated. For example, cationic antistatic agents can eliminate static electricity by ionic conduction; Nonionic antistatic agents rely on moisture absorption to conduct electricity.

Flame retardant masterbatch: generally contains flame retardants, such as halogen-based flame retardants (such as bromine series), phosphorus series flame retardants, nitrogen series flame retardants, etc. The principle of action includes: endothermic cooling, flame retardants decompose and endothermic when heated to reduce the surface temperature of plastics; Covering isolation, the carbon layer formed by the decomposition of flame retardants is covered on the plastic surface to isolate oxygen and heat; To terminate the free radical reaction, the flame retardant can capture the free radicals generated during the combustion process and interrupt the combustion chain reaction.

Antibacterial masterbatch: contains antibacterial agents, such as silver ions, quaternary ammonium salts, organotin, etc. Antibacterial agents can interfere with the metabolic process of bacteria and inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria by destroying the cell wall and membrane of bacteria. For example, silver ions can combine with proteins and nucleic acids in bacterial cells, resulting in bacterial death.

Toughened master batch: Usually contains elastomers or rubber-like substances. When subjected to external force, these toughening components can absorb energy, and improve the toughness and impact resistance of plastic products by deformation, dispersed stress, etc.

Anti-aging masterbatch: contains antioxidants, light stabilizers and other ingredients. Antioxidants can capture the free radicals generated during the oxidation process of plastics and prevent the oxidation reaction. Light stabilizers reduce the damage of ultraviolet light to plastic molecular chains by absorbing or reflecting ultraviolet light, thus delaying aging.

Smooth masterbatch: the main ingredients are smooth agents, such as erucic acid amide, oleic acid amide, etc. They can migrate to the plastic surface, reduce the friction coefficient of the plastic surface, and make plastic products smoother during processing and use.

Color masterbatch: contains pigments or dyes to give plastic products a specific color through the selective absorption and reflection of light by pigments or dyes.
